Protestors were banging on the doors of the supreme court screaming to the top of their lungs in order to put a halt on the decision they feared most..
“Are there any senators in the chamber who wish to vote or change a vote?”
*Silence falls over the crowd*
“If not, on this vote, the nomination of Brett M Kavanaugh of Maryland to be an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States is confirmed.”
This is a very historic moment as, Kavanaugh was voted into the Supreme Court on October 6, 2018, after several sexual assault accusations were filed against him. The vote was 50-48 and now the Supreme Court is now almost completely conservative. This decision will definitely cause a divide in the white house because this means that some were in support of a person accused of causing harm to women.
Over the past week, we have been presented with a lot of new evidence regarding Judge Kavanaugh. Two new women, Deborah Ramirez and Julie Swetnick, have come forth as well accusing him of exposing his genitals, being present for, and participating in gang rapes. Not only this, but there was an anonymous letter that was sent in accusing him of being overly aggressive with women and his former Yale classmate did an on air interview attesting to all of these women’s claims; “I don’t believe that heavy drinking or even loudish behavior of an 18 or even 21 year old should condemn a person for the rest of his life. I would be a hypocrite to think so. However, I have direct, repeated knowledge about bretts drinking and his disposition while drunk. I do believe that bretts actions as a 53 year old federal judge matter. If he lied about his past actions on national television and speaking under oath to the united states senate and I believe those lies should have consequences. I can unequivocally say that the possibility that he ever blacked out from drinking and in downplaying the degree in frequency of his drinking, Brett has not told the truth. I felt it was my civic duty to tell of my experience while drinking with Brett…I’ve seen Brett drunk to the point where he could easily be passed out.”
While it may have seemed the odds were stacked against Kavanaugh, there were some people that were willing to testify in his defense. Over 60 women have signed a letter in support of Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination. Another former friend from Yale made the claim that he never saw him blackout and that he was with Kavanaugh when we woke up and went to bed at night. Besides the fact that it’s almost impossible that one person can account for his actions all for years of high school, Kavanaugh counteracts this statement when a letter surfaced that Brett Kavanaugh wrote where he referred to he and his friends as “loud, obnoxious drunks” and “prolific pukers”.
I’ll admit, this story is definitely a toss up due to the lack of evidence, timing, and the accusers’ ability to remember details. What’s even more compelling is that in 1989, our president spent over $85,000 placing ads in every news paper he could recall in order to throw five black and latino men away in jail for the rest of their lives after they were accused of sexually assaulting a white woman — but he’s in complete support of Kavanaugh? After Trump got on stage last week and mocked an Dr. Blasey-Ford’s testimony, I’m not too sure of what we should’ve expected. After all, we are discussing a man who encourages the incessant grabbing of women’s genitals.
