Taraji P. Henson creates nonprofit organization for black mental health

According to Complex, Taraji P. Henson has launched a nonprofit organization dedicated to black mental health.

The Boris Lawerence Henson Foundation was created by the actress to encourage African-Americans to speak out about mental health amongst the community.

Henson’s son struggled with mental health after the death of his father, according to Complex. Henson said, “It was like looking for a unicorn, and the reason that happens is because we don’t talk about it in our community.”

It was personal for Henson. According to a press statement earlier this week Henson speaks on her father and his mental health issues. “I stand now in his absence, committed to offering support to African Americans who face trauma daily, simply because they are black,” Henson stated.

Celebrities have a misconception that they have it all together, according to Henson. The actress says, “We’re suffering and struggling just like the regular persona.”

Henson’s first initiative for her organization was hosting a fundraising event to allow guests to buy her personal clothing items, shoes, and accessories.

The money Henson fundraises will go towards bringing art to inner-city schools bathrooms. For more information on the foundation, the link can be found below.
