Saints lose big at home after questionable call sends the Rams to Atlanta.
The Rams just closed out an incredible 23-26 overtime NFC Championship win against the New Orleans Saints that sent them to Atlanta to face either the Patriots or the Chiefs. Los Angeles won this game after falling behind 13-0, but rallied to hold the Saints to only one touchdown after the first quarter. The game was a chess match throughout regulation and into overtime , but a suspect no call by the officiating crew is what will have the sports world talking for the coming weeks. Not only did Rams defender clearly make contact with a Saints Receiver Tommy Lee Lewis, the hit was also a Helmet to Helmet Penalty, both 15 yard fouls. This infraction occurred within the last two minutes of the game, and had it been called, the Saints would have been able to run the clock out and kick the game winning field goal.
The penalty stopped the clock, and gave Los Angeles an opportunity to match their field goal and eventually win in overtime after John Johnson picked Brees off on their first possession in the extra quarter.
We lose a chance to go to the Super Bowl with a call like that… it’s just disappointing. – Saints Head Coach Sean Payton
Payton didn’t mince words in the post game press conference, said that the replay system should be revamped, and it’s a tough way to lose a game with such high stakes. This call will be referenced when the NFL discusses rule changes in the near future.
The Saints also benefited from shoddy officiating, as you can see..
