Team Lebron defeated Team Giannis 178-164 in the 2019 NBA All Star Game. Team Lebron was led by Kevin Durant, who scored 31 points in a winning effort and was named All Star MVP in the process.
The game started out in a blur, as team Giannis, led by Giannis Antetekoumpo jumped out to a 53-37 lead in a first quarter that featured next to no inside-defense. Giannis and teammate Khris Middleton were able to play buddy ball and punish Team Lebron with a reign of dunks and threes in the tune of 28 combined first quarter points.
Team Giannis jumped out to an 18 point lead in the second quarter after exciting plays like a reverse 360-degree dunk by Paul George and an emphatic alley-oop dunk from Giannis, one in which his head was above the backboard, that was set up by Steph Curry.
The excitement soon spilled off court as hip hop artist J. Cole performed at Halftime, first donning a yellow Off-White jacket, then changing into a retro Charlotte Hornets windbreaker, paying homage to the host city, and his home of North Carolina. Cole also gave a shoutout to 21 Savage, in support of the Atlanta rapper facing deportation for an expired visa.
Down 95-82 Before play resumed in the second half, Lebron James was asked who would step up in the third quarter. He responded “we gone see, whoever get hot”.
Multiple players heated it up for team Lebron in the third quarter, as Bradley Beal, Damian Lillard and Klay Thompson rained a flurry of threes over the heads of their opponents. They combined for eight threes in the period, and led a 19-2 run to get them in distance.
Kevin Durant was the next man in line to step up for Team Lebron as he turned the gas on, scoring 12 in the fourth.Team Lebron went on a 20-5 run in the middle of the fourth and cruised to a 178-164 victory.
For his efforts, Durant was named All-Star Game MVP for a second time. He last earned the honor in 2012.
In recent years, the All Star Game has been played for money toward charity in a way to increase effort on both sides of the ball. Because of the victory, Team Lebron was able to donate $350,000 to the charity organization Right Moves for Youth. Team Giannis donated $150,000 to Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina.
Team Captains Lebron James and Giannis Antetekounmpo finished with 19 and 38 points respectively.
