“Tis the season to be jolly, but how can I be when I have nobody?…” is how the Emotions’ soulful Christmas ballad starts off. As a child, my mother used to always play this song every December. I used to either laugh or roll my eyes, but now that I am older and (very) single, the song hits different.
Now we all knew that summer 2018 was a “city girl summer”, meaning that it was not time to settle at all! Not when it’s hot outside and you’re trying to stack your money up. But now that it’s cold outside, what are us city girls and city boy supposed to do? Well the real City Girl, Yung Miami, has clearly left us single ladies hanging. Lately, she has had somebody keeping her body warm and face smiling. The two recently took a baecation to Mexico where sis was on her Instagram being boo’d up! Don’t get me wrong, I am very happy for her, but I thought it was “F*ck Dat N***a” 2018. It seems to have switched over to “Give It A Try” 2018 (or at least for her).
From celebrities to close friends, everyone seems to have someone to kiss under the mistletoe! But what about us?? What about those who does not have a true love giving them gifts throughout the twelve days of Christmas? Or somebody to hurry down the chimney? So what DO the lonely do at Christmas time? Well let me tell you, honey because what we are NOT going to do is be a Grinch just because there is no one to share our hot chocolate with or take to your job’s Christmas party. So here are few things you could do for yourself this holiday season:
- TREAT YO SELF: One pro to being single for the holidays is that you don’t have to spend money on an extra person! Buying gifts can get super expensive and most do not have money to blow, so the less you have to buy the better! So instead of buying a gift for a boo, you can use it to treat yourself because nine times out of ten, you deserve it. Period.
- Have Family Time: The holiday season is the time to spend with YOUR family! Being single means that you don’t have to worry about which family’s house you should go over for Christmas brunch and dinner. Or the nerves you would have if you were to have meet his or her family for the first time. Spending all the quality time with your family during the holiday season is very important because anything could happen to anybody you care about within the next year. Plus, relationships are temporary, but family is forever.
- Hangout with Friends: Aside from spending time with family, try to hang out with your friends too! Whether it’s the club, ice skating, or an Ugly Christmas Sweater Party, making memories with your crew will sure have you feeling not so lonely. There is plenty of festivities to do during this time, so don’t just sit in the house scrolling on Instagram and Twitter wishing you had somebody to cuddle with. That’s lame.
So back to the question, “What Do the Lonely Do?” There is plenty for us to do honestly. You can definitely be jolly without a significant other, period. Don’t let these social media relationships get you down! Just remember to treat yourself, spend time with family, and hangout with your friends. Happy Holidays!
