YNW Melly has been arrested and charged with two accounts of first degree murder for the October 2018 death of his close friends, fellow rappers YNW Sakchaser and YNW Juvy.
The 19 year-old rap artist, whose legal name is Jamell Demons, has been accused by the Miramar Police Department of murdering the two and trying to cover up the scene to make it look like a drive-by shooting.
Melly is an up and coming rap artist from the hub of Broward County in South Florida. Where him and many others have forged a unique music scene.
The shooting occurred on the night of October 26, 2018 when, according to police, Demons shot and killed his victims. Demons was not the lone assailant in the incident as 20 year-old Cortland Henry, a.k.a YNW Bortland was also arrested and charged with first degree murder.
According to police they brought him in because forensic evidence lifted from the crime scene. Also they claim Henry’s account on the events last October did not match up with the evidence they gathered, leading them to the conclusion that the two tried to cover up the scene by making it look like a drive-by shooting.
YNW Melly is known for his song Murder on my Mind. A song that details the true story of how he shot and killed one of his friends when he was younger. The lyrics to the song serve as an eerie omen to the incident:
“His face is on a T-Shirt and his family traumatized
I didn’t even mean to shoot ’em, he just caught me by surprise
I reloaded my pistol, cocked it back, and shot him twice
His body dropped down to the floor and he had teardrops in his eyes
He grabbed me by my hands and said he was afraid to die
I told ’em it’s too late my friend, it’s time to say “Goodbye”
And he died inside my arms, blood all on my shirt”
Before turning himself in on Wednesday, Melly put out a statement on his official Instagram maintaining his innocence:
“and supporters no I did not get locked up in Washington, but I am turning myself in today I want you guys to know I love you and appreciate every single one of y’all, a couple months ago I lost my two brothers by violence and now the system want to find justice.. unfortunately a lot of rumors and lies are being said but no worries god is with me and my brother @ynw.bortlen and we want y’all to remember it’s a ynw Family I love you @ynwsakchaser1 and @ynwjuvy #freeus”
Multiple rappers commented on the Instagram post and showed support for him. Lil Durk commented “Free my shorty” and Yung Bans commented “…got got yo back twin”
Demons is being held without bond with a 24 hour postponement of his court date so the judge can become familiar with the case.
